Rabat – Born in Belgium and raised in Rabat, Nora Darrhar is a prominent figure in Morocco’s sporting landscape. At only 31 years old, Darrhar is a source of national pride as she has honored the Moroccan flag in several international competitions, including winning the gold medal at the 2019 African Beach Games with Imane Zeroual and the 2022 African Beach Volleyball Championships in Agadir.

Darrhar’s journey from a diverse sporting background in Rabat to becoming a renowned volleyball player and business graduate is a testament to her resilience, determination, and relentless pursuit of excellence.

A Childhood Molded by Sports

Growing up in Rabat, Nora Darrhar was immersed in a world of sports from an early age. With a mother who taught physical education and a father who was a seven-time Moroccan equestrian champion, athleticism was part of Darrhar’s upbringing.

But it was her innate sense of purpose that drove her to excel in sports. From a very young age, Darrhar had a strong interest in sports and a desire to become a professional athlete. That hunger to excel would drive her to pursue a variety of sports — track and field, gymnastics, horseback riding, and volleyball.

Despite her undeniable promise and brilliance, Darrhar knew she would have to be persistent and dedicated to fulfill her potential and live out her childhood dream. So she sought out opportunities in various disciplines and academies, impressing her examiners at every turn.

“I knew there was no other path for me, I lived for sports,” she said in an interview with  Morocco World News (MWN).

Her journey was not without its challenges, however, as she suffered a setback in a horseback riding accident that derailed her budding track and field career. “I tried to join the national selection of track and field as my sprint times were really good with barely any practice, but the morning of the tryouts I had an accident riding horses which cost me my nose (completely broken in pieces) and my track and field potential career,” Darrhar recalled.

But the accident did little to dampen her ambition as her constant search for a career as an athlete led her to volleyball — an unfamiliar territory at first but one where her determination remained unwavering.

Embracing Volleyball on Foreign Soil

At the age of 15, Nora Darrhar sought to boost her prospects of becoming a professional athlete by joining a French volleyball center, a goal she found difficult to achieve given the many obstacles non-French nationals face when trying to play in French centers.

Despite her father’s objections to her leaving Morocco alone at such a young age, her determination to pursue her passion abroad prevailed and she was able to join a volleyball center at the age of 16.

“I made the team and then with a lot of convincing, I was finally leaving the nest to join a professional academy while attending my last 2 years of High school in France,” she recalled.

Joining the team of the French volleyball center was a pivotal moment in her journey as an athlete: it gave the opportunity to dedicate herself to volleyball and reach the heights of elite competition. And while becoming an elite professional athlete was the ultimate goal for her, the young Moroccan never missed an opportunity to enrich her academic portfolio.

Reflecting on her dedication to academics despite her ambition to be an athlete, Darrhar said her parents taught her from a young age that while she could focus on sports, she also needed “to secure another path in case of injury” or to fund her athletic career.

After graduating from Montpelier University in France, the young Moroccan set her sights on bigger and better things, moving to the US at 20 years old to join St. Andrews University in North Carolina and pursue a Master’s degree in Business Administration.

As a libero on the St. Andrews University volleyball team, one of her outstanding moments was qualifying for the national championship, an accomplishment that has gone down in school history. Her excellence as an athlete earned her the distinction of being the first athlete in any sport to earn the National Player of the Week title.

When asked about the secret to balancing a successful academic and athletic career, she said that it is “still not an easy task.” Discipline is key, she argued, “especially in a season where you can have about 35 games in 3 months and some are 9 hours by bus away, but you learn to adapt and be disciplined, which is another thing sports taught me about life.”

Darrhar’s numerous accolades as an athlete include a bronze medal at the Moroccan National Under-21 Equestrian Championship.

“I used to train with my dad, whom I consider the toughest but best coach ever. He got me on the podium in only a year and a half of training while others had been riding for years,” she said, highlighting the important role her father has played in her development as a person and a professional athlete.

“It definitely wasn’t easy and I remember crying a lot at the time, but that also made me the tough athlete that I am now and I don’t think I would have been able to make it that far otherwise,” she explained.

The promising young athlete concluded by expressing her pride in representing the Moroccan flag, noting that her greatest inspiration is her father, who represented Morocco in equestrian sports throughout his career. “It’s like taking over his legacy, which is another pride as well,” she said.
