Rabat – Al-Azhar, the revered Islamic studies institution, broke yesterday its silence on the ongoing Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip in the wake of a brutal Israeli air strike that destroyed a hospital and killed hundreds.

In a statement, Al-Azhar said that Arab and Muslim nations “must fundamentally reconsider its reliance on the arrogant Western and American powers.”

Palestinians “should have confidence” that the West, with all its military capabilities and “destructive machines,” is “weak” and afraid when it faces you, the statement added.

Al Azhar further explained that Israel and its Western allies are fighting on “foreign land” and are “defending beliefs and ideologies that time has left behind.”

The statement further called on Arab, Muslim nations to “stand firmly behind Palestine” and its oppressed people who face an enemy “devoid of conscience, feelings, and sensibilities.”

Israel has turned its back on “humanity, and ethics,” the Al Azhar statement stressed.

Mai Al-Kaila, the Palestinian Minister of Health, described Israel’s targeting of the hospital as a “genocide.” The minister said in a statement: “We appeal to the international community to protect the Palestinian people.”

She added that the health sector in Gaza is on the verge of collapse with services running out as Israel has been deliberately targeting hospitals. Many countries and international organizations have condemned the attacks, while Israel has tried to distance itself from the tragic air raid, blaming it instead on a failed rocket launch by Hamas.
