Rabat – The Muslim community in Türkiye is expected to celebrate the first day of Ramadan on Thursday, March 23.

The first fast will be held on March 23, 2023 this year, Turkish TV channel NTV quoted the Presidency of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye as saying.

The same source added that Laylat Al Qadr, known in English as the Night of Decree or the Night of Power, will take place on April 17 in Türkiye.

Turkish Muslim scholar and President of Religious Affairs Ali Erbas announced today that this year’s Ramdan theme will be “Ramadan and Solidarity” in order to create social awareness about Türkiye’s tragic earthquakes.

“We have endured indescribable agony. As a nation, we are going through difficult and troubled times. That is why this year’s Ramadan has special significance,”  Erbas said.

He went on to say, “Ramadan is a month in which we shall discover a solution to our concerns and overcome our obstacles. The month of zakat, benevolence, and mercy.”

Erbas added that moral support services and special guidance programs will be carried out throughout the country during Ramadan and especially in the earthquake region.

Muslims refrain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk for 29 to 30 days throughout the month of Ramadan, depending on the sighting of the crescent moon.

Other countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Algeria, Singapore, and India are also expected to announce Thursday, March 23 as the first day of Ramadan 2023.

Morocco is expected to carry out the crescent moon sighting for Ramadan on the evening of Wednesday, March 22.

Many astronomers believe that Morocco will also start fasting Ramadan on March 23.
