Rabat – Heavy thunderstorms between 25 and 50 millimeters are expected to hit several provinces across Morocco today and Wednesday.

The General Directorate of Meteorology (DMN) released a new orange-level weather alert earlier today, forecasting stormy showers, particularly in southern and central Morocco.

Stormy rainfall ranging between 30 and 50 millimeters is expected from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday at 12p.m. in the provinces of Aousserd, Oued Eddahab, Boujdour, Smara, and Laayoune.

The weather alert also forecasts stormy downpours in provinces including Azilal, Fquih Ben Salah, Beni Mellal, Khouribga, Khenifra, El Kelaa des Sraghna, Chichaoua, Al Haouz, Youssoufia, Marrakech, Rhamna, Ouarzazate, and Tiznit.

The rainfall will hit Tiznit, Taroudant Tata, Chtouka Ait Baha, Agadir, Ida Outanane, Inezgane-Ait Melloul, Essaouira, and Tan Tan, Assa Zag, Sidi Ifni, Guelmim, and Terfaya.

Marking the stormy weather will be hail and winds ranging from 60 to 85 kilometers in several other provinces in the Oriental region, including Jerada, Nador, Oujda Angad, Berkane, Guercif and Driouch, DMN noted.

Other provinces such as Khemisset, Al Hoceima, Taourirt, Fez, Sefrou, Ifrane, Moulay Yacoub, Taza, El Hajeb, Midelt, and Boulemane will also experience rainfall between 25 and 35 millimeters.

DMN issued a few weather alerts, forecasting rainfall this week in several provinces, including in southern provinces.

The expected increase in rainfall levels over the coming days might contribute to both mitigating the far-reaching repercussions of Morocco’s most severe drought season in decades.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, this year’s alarming drought season has resulted in a considerable drop in  Morocco’s cereals yields, which have experienced a 64% decrease in the 2021-2022 agriculture season compared to a year earlier.
