Rabat – Judicial police in the city of Casablanca arrested on Sunday last week a man on  charges of involvement in a physical assault against a minor.

The 35-year-old man incited his “ferocious” dog to attack the minor, exposing him to physical assault, a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said on Monday.

The dog, deemed to be of a “dangerous species,” seriously injured the victim, the statement noted.

Police were able to identify the owner of the dog after preliminary research and investigation, and the man has since been taken into custody pending further investigation into the case.

In March, the Moroccan police released a memorandum concerning the ownership of vicious dogs that put citizens’ safety at risk.

The report cited the requirements from Law 56-12 on the prevention and protection of people against “dangerous dogs,” noting that the possession, domestication, purchasing, selling, and breeding of certain species of dogs is forbidden.

“A dangerous dog is one which displays, by nature of its breed or morphological characteristics, aggression deemed to be dangerous to man,” says Law 56-12.

Any dog owner accused of violating the law will face a maximum sentence of five years in jail and fines of up to 50,000 MAD ($4,692).
