Rabat – After several months of suspense, Munir El Haddadi’s case has been closed. The verdict? The Moroccan-Spanish footballer will not join the Moroccan national football team.
For months, the Royal Moroccan Federation (FRMF) was attempting to convince FIFA to give the 21-year-old international player the right to represent Morocco. However, an unexpected turn of events destroyed Haddadi’s dream.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has closed El Haddadi’s case after the withdrawal of the appeal request.
Back in November, Moroccan news daily Assabah reported that El Haddadi visited FIFA officials in person to appeal that they “defend the rights of binational players.”
He also contacted FRMF, calling for their support in his petition to FIFA to allow him to play with Morocco in the 2018 World Cup.
The withdrawal of the appeal request was confirmed by the Moroccan official football website Lion de l’Atlas. It is not sure whether the withdrawal of the appeal request was made by El Haddadi or the FRMF itself.
Born to Moroccan parents in Spain, the youngster represented Spain at the youth level and made a brief appearance at an international game against Macedonia in 2014. His appearance as a substitute ruined his chances to represent the Moroccan national football team, according to FIFA eligibility rules.
The forward is currently playing for Alaves. He joined the team on loan for the 2017-2018 period. He also represented the Spanish national team, Spanish national under-19 football team and Spanish national under-21 football team.
During his youth, the 21-year-old footballer also played for several Spanish clubs, including Atletico Madrid, FC Valencia, and Rayo Majadahonda .
