Rabat – YouTube is the leading social media in Morocco with 21.40 million users in early 2022, according to Google data cited in a report from DataPortal, an internet database.

The report notes that YouTube ad reach was set at 57% of Morocco’s population, and 67.7% of Morocco’s internet users. Meanwhile, the platform’s reach for Morocco’s female audience was set at 49% in January 2022, against a 51% male audience

Meta’s platform, Facebook, comes second with 18.95 million users at the start of 2022, according to the report.

Given that Meta restricts its platform to the 13-year-olds and plus population, the 18.95 million also represents 65.5% of Moroccans eligible to hold Facebook accounts, explains the report.

Facebook ad reach was set in January 2022 at a sweeping 60% of total internet users irrelevant of age, according to Meta data quoted in the report.

Breaking down Facebook ad reach by gender, the report indicates that 37.8% of Facebook ad audiences in Morocco were female, against 62.2% male audience.

Instagram, also a Meta-owned platform, has 9.3 million users in the North African country, with an ad reach of 29.4% of the country’s internet users base, and 24.8% of the total population irrelevant of age.

Given that Instagram operates under the same age restrictions as Facebook, data indicates that 32.1% of Morocco’s eligible population uses Instagram at the start of 2022, according to the report.

Divided along gender lines, 45.9% of Instagram ads audience were female, against 54.1% male audience, the report points out.

Facebook Messenger follows with a user base of 8.35 million. Video sharing platform TikTok has 5.97 million users in Morocco, followed by Snapchat with 5.50 million users, LinkedIn with 3.5 million users, and Twitter arrives last with 2.85 million users in Morocco.

Overall, the report points out that 23.80 million Moroccans, the equivalent of 63.4% of the country’s official population, have social media accounts. This indicates a 1.8 million year-to-year hike in social media users in Morocco, notes the report.

Remote learning, strict lockdown, and the rise of working from home trends have all contributed to the significant hike in internet penetration in Morocco throughout 2020 and 2021.

Of Morocco’s 37.56 million population, 31.59 million were connected to the internet as of January 2022, a 1.2% year-on-year increase, according to the report.
