Rabat – Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi has become the African player with the most appearances in FIFA World Cup history, further emphasizing his place among the continent’s football legends.
The Paris Saint-Germain full-back reached this record during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, overtaking the previous long-standing record of 11 appearances. Following their 3-0 triumph against Canada in the Round of 16, Hakimi stands at 15 World Cup appearances across his career (3 in 2018, 7 in 2022, and 5 so far in 2026).
Hakimi made his World Cup debut at Russia 2018, where he played all three group-stage matches. He added seven appearances during Morocco’s historic run to the semi-finals at Qatar 2022 before featuring in every match of the Atlas Lions’ campaign at the 2026 World Cup.Â
The 27-year-old continues to play a key role in Morocco’s success and has become one of the country’s greatest footballers, both for his performances and his consistency on the biggest stage.
Africa’s most-capped World Cup players
The Atlas Lions have dominated the top continental spots. Just after Hakimi comes Azzedine Ounahi, who has a record of 12 World Cup appearances and decorated his last match against Canada with a brace in the Round of 16.Â
Behind them sits Morocco’s star goalkeeper Yassine Bounou with 11 crucial World Cup match contributions, matching the milestone set by legendary Cameroonian forward François Omam-Biyik and Ghana’s icon Asamoah Gyan.
