Rabat –  Moroccan fashion designer Fatim Filali Idrissi has displayed her latest caftan collection in the Morocco pavilion at Dubai Expo 2020, celebrating the beauty and elegance of the traditional dress.

Idrissi is a renowned fashion designer who merges the traditional style of  Moroccan caftans with touches of modern haute-couture.

Morocco’s Minister of Economy and Finance Nadia Fettah Alaoui and Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid attended the fashion show along with Moroccan expatriates and Arab and foreign visitors.

In a March 28 press release, the Moroccan designer expressed her “sincere gratitude” for being asked to participate in the Dubai Expo 2020.

The international event provides a platform for knowledge sharing in several sectors including tourism and handicrafts. Since October 2021, the expo has reported more than 20 million visitors, with 180 countries in attendance.

The Moroccan designer said that she often spends from 3 to 6 months creating her collection. The preparations vary from looking for inspiration to searching for high-quality fabric and skilled artisans to produce customized and unique caftans for her Moroccan and foreign customers.

In 2020, UNESCO recognized Fatim Filali Idrissi’s efforts to promote the caftan. This is one of many awards won by the fashion designer.

The designer’s works have been displayed in the Middle East, Europe, America, and Asia. She has also dressed renowned Moroccan and international celebrities such as Hatim Ammor, Dunia Batma, and DJ Khaled’s wife Nicole Tuck.

Idrissi is one of the numerous ambassadors of Moroccan caftan. With her talent attracting international attention, the designer has joined the league of fashion icons promoters of caftan as the symbol of the country’s fashion.

Originating from Mesopotamia, caftan or Kaftan in Persian, is made of cotton or silk. It is worn across the Middle East and North Africa with each society adding its own touch to it.

In Morocco, caftan embroidery varies from one region to another. The garment often covers the length of the body and has long and wide sleeves.

It can be worn daily at home or on special occasions such as weddings. The caftan made for celebration often uses high-quality and expensive materials.
