Rabat – Around 3,984 Moroccans have fled Ukraine amid Russia’s invasion of the country.
Morocco’s government has in the past few days announced several measures to help repatriate its citizens from Ukraine. The North African country dispatched diplomats in countries neighboring Ukraine to assist Moroccans fleeing the conflict zone.
Around 20 consulate officials, including former consuls generals, are helping Moroccan embassies in their preparations to welcome Moroccans and provide them with necessary aid in Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Poland.
Morocco called on its citizens to leave Ukraine through its land borders with the four countries due to the closure of the Ukrainian airspace.
Morocco’s national carrier Royal Air Maroc has so far mobilized 11 flights that will operate starting today to repatriate Moroccan citizens fleeing Ukraine.
Royal Air Maroc will offer the flights at MAD 750 ($75 USD), a special price exclusively available for Moroccans escaping the conflict zones in Ukraine to return to Morocco.
Morocco is the second country that was able to help relocate thousands of its nationals from Ukraine amid the crisis.
Israel is topping the list, with the Foreign Israeli Ministry having announced that it has helped around Israeli 4,000 nationals leave Ukraine following Russia’s invasion.
Amid the raging confrontation between Russian troops and Ukraine’s military forces in several Ukrainian cities, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has denounced Russia’s actions in his country.
“They don’t know a thing about Kyiv, about our history… But they all have orders to erase our history, erase our country, erase us all,” President Zelenskiy said of Russian troops. Saying that Ukraine’s army has killed 6,000 Russian soldiers since the start of the Russian invasion, Zelenskiy emphasized that his country will not give up its fight for survival.
