Rabat – The Moroccan National Company for the Realization and Management of Stadiums (SONARGES) has started searching for partners to invest in autonomizing the energy of Morocco’s biggest stadiums.
The project would involve stadiums in Marrakech, Agadir, Tanger, and Fez, and would see the stadiums benefit from the use of solar powers.
The company is looking for solar power solutions that can cover between 60 and 90% of the peak consumption of the stadiums, or 32% of the annual consumption.
The move comes as another step in Morocco’s plan to switch to renewable energies. In addition to combating climate change, a switch to renewables can allow the country to achieve more financial and energy independence, away from importing oil from other countries.
With recent investments in renewable energies, especially solar, the North African country is inching closer towards its goal of using 80% renewable energies by 2050.
The ambitious goal is attainable due to a rapid decrease in prices of renewables and energy storage, according to the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development.
The adoption of renewables aims mainly to mitigate the effects of climate change and find more sustainable energy sources and fossil fuels continue to be exhausted by the world’s growing consumption.
This year, Morocco witnessed a severe drought which many experts said was a secondary result of global climate change.
