Rabat – Morocco’s Mohammed V airport in Casablanca ranked fifth in the world’s most improved airport award issued by Skytrax, a UK-based consultancy firm.
The award takes into consideration the airport’s quality and performance improvement throughout the past year.
For 2022, Riyadh’s airport topped the list ahead of New York LGA, Saudi Arabia’s Dammam airport, and Seattle-Tacoma airport, US.
The American Salt Lake city airport came 6th in the global ranking followed by the airports in Addis Ababa, Tbilisi, Berlin Brandenburg, and Nur-Sultan.
Despite showing progress in this specific Skytrax ranking, the Mohammed V airport did not feature in the top 100 airports list also issued by the UK-based consultancy.
Last year, Morocco’s biggest airport in Casablanca and Marrakech-Menara airport featured in the long and prestigious list as they topped the African ranking thanks to their high sanitation and hygiene standards amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

For this summer season, Morocco is welcoming thousands of tourists and Moroccans residing abroad. The marked increase in the number of travelers to the North African country has put intense pressure on the management authorities of the largest access points to the Kingdom, mainly airports and ports. By late May, Morocco had welcomed 1.5 million tourists in 2022.
As Morocco prioritizes the revival of the tourism sector this season, the country has launched expansion projects in international airports such as the Dakhla airport which is expected to accommodate 1 million passengers per year. In addition, the country has secured a $189 million loan to finance the Rabat-Sale airport expansion.
Moroccan tourism stakeholders have also worked on advertising the North African country as an ideal travel destination, particularly in the European, Middle Eastern, and North American markets.
Morocco’s national carrier, Royal Air Maroc, is expected to recover 90% of its 2019 network by the end of this year.
Additionally, new international routes were launched to accommodate the rising demand for Morocco driven by the country’s easing of its COVID restrictions.
