Rabat – Morocco has dispatched “several thousands” of police officers to Qatar to assist the gulf nation in reinforcing security for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, the magazine Jeune Afrique reported on Monday.
Under a cooperation agreement with Qatar, Morocco sent thousands of law enforcement agents to contribute to the security coverage of the highly anticipated event, noted the report.
The news comes days after the head of Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security and General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST)visited the Lusail Iconic stadium set to host the final game of the 2022 World Cup.
Last month, Abdellatif Hammouchi, the DGSN-DGST chief, became the first senior foreign official to visit the 80,000-seat capacity stadium.
Hammouchi visited the various infrastructures within the stadium, and sources told Morocco World News that the Moroccan official mainly examined the security operations room and the command post for cybersecurity. He also held several meetings with Qatari officials to discuss security arrangements for the World Cup.
The visit came on the sidelines of Morocco’s participation in the International Fair for Land Security and Civil Defense, called Milipol Qatar 2022.
Following the event, the Qatari Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani received Hammouchi to discuss security collaboration between Doha and Rabat.
In late May, Morocco agreed to send a team of cybersecurity experts to Qatar in preparations for the FIFA World Cup.
Morocco had initially expressed interest in assisting the country to organize the most prestigious event in world football in 2020, offering the Gulf country to contribute with human resources and logistical assistance.
The FIFA World Cup is set to take place from November 21 to December 18. The event will see the participation of 32 countries, including Morocco and Qatar.
Doha and Rabat share friendly diplomatic relations, with both Moroccan and Qatari officials expressing interest in further boosting bilateral cooperation in various fields.
