Casablanca – After reporting an unprecedented increase in the number of travelers last week, Operation Crossing the Strait (OPE) marked the transfer of more than 700,000 passengers and 170,000 vehicles to North Africa this week from the seven Spanish ports involved in the operation.
According to Civil Protection figures, the departure phase accumulated 705,516 people and 170,293 automobiles, with 73.2% and 74% of them embarking from the Cadiz ports of Algeciras and Tarifa, respectively.
Managed by the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras, these two ports have the largest traffic in the OPE.
179,122 passengers (127,997 in Algeciras and Tarifa) and 41,767 cars (29,989 in the two Cadiz ports) left Spain in the past week.
On the other hand, the total number of passengers in the return phase, which began on July 15, stands out 25,588, with 21,364 passengers disembarking in Algeciras and Tarifa, including 6,700 automobiles (5,641 through both Cadiz ports).

The Spanish data collection sources anticipate an increase in the number of passengers and automobiles during this year’s Operation Crossing the Strait.
3.6 million passengers and 800,000 vehicles are expected to cross the Strait over the summer, which includes the return season between August and September and the departure period between June and July.
To facilitate the operation, the OPE project in Spain has promised more than 500,000 square meters in the region of the Andalusian ports, including plazas and parking lots with a capacity of 16,500 spaces.
