Rabat – The Council of Jewish Communities in Morocco expressed gratitude for King Mohammed VI’s recent instruction for the establishment of a new organization for the Moroccan Jewish community.
The Council of Jewish Communities issued a communique on Thursday, July 14, conveying “deep gratitude and immense pride” of the Moroccan Jewish diaspora.
The instruction to establish a new organization for the community will seek to offer members of the diaspora a “framework that will allow them to further strengthen ties with the Kingdom and to get involved fervently in the defense of national causes.”
The press release stressed that the measure will also ensure the preservation of the “sacred values of Moroccan Judaism and the rehabilitation and promotion of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Hebrew tributary of the rich Moroccan Civilization.”
The diaspora council underlined that the proposed measures were derived from consultations with representatives of the Jewish community. The council further emphasized Moroccan Jews’ attachment to their motherland and the aspirations to strengthen the bonds of allegiance that linked the global Moroccan Jewish community to the kingdom.
On Wednesday, King Mohammed VI chaired a ministers’ meeting, during which Ministry of Interior Abdelouafi Laftit presented measures to implement the King’s instruction concerning the creation of an organization for the Moroccan Jewish community.
During the ministers’ council, Laftit introduced the newly created National Council of the Moroccan Jewish community. The council will oversee the management of community affairs and the preservation of Jewish cultural heritage.
The presentation also covered the Commission of Moroccan Jews Abroad, which works to consolidate the ties of Moroccan Jews living abroad to their country of origin.
Although Morocco was home to as many as 200,000 Jews before Israel became a state, the North African country now only hosts 2,0000 Jews out of the 15.2 million Jewish people living across the world.
