Rabat – Moroccan athlete Taoufik Allam claimed the winning title at the Irish Life Dublin Marathon today, finishing first in 2:11:30.

Taoufik’s impressive performance put him ahead of the second-place winner Ashenafi Boja of Ethiopia, whose time was 2:13:59.

Another Ethiopian athlete, Birhanu Teshome, claimed third place with a time of 2:14:26.

Allam reached the halfway point in the men’s segment of the race in 1:07:03 with Boja and Ethiopian Birhanu Teshome.

The three contestants remained together at the 30km mark. However, Allam amped up his performance giving him a lead of one minute 43 seconds over Boja at the 40km mark.

The Moroccan contestant maintained and increased his advantage over the last mile, running the second half almost three minutes faster than the first 21 kilometers.

The Irish Life Dublin Marathon marks Allam’s comeback into the sport. The 33-year-old had been absent from contesting since 2017. For his victory, he received a prize of €12,000 (MAD 130,000).

The marathon took place with more than 25,000 runners participating. It’s the first time the marathon takes place since 2019, as it was canceled over concerns about the global spread of COVID-19.
