Rabat – The directorate of a local prison in Oujda, in Morocco’s Oriental region, has announced that a terrorism convict committed suicide in the morning today.
The convict, who had been sentenced to death, was part of a terrorist cell named “Chamharouch.”
The cell was involved in the heinous murder of two Scandinavian tourists in Imlil near Mount Toubkal in December 2018.
The prison directorate detailed that the prisoner committed suicide by using a “piece of cloth” that he attached to his cell’s window to hang himself to death.
The prison directorate noted it immediately informed the public prosecutor’s office and the prisoner’s family of his death, in accordance with the “provisions of the law regulating prison institutions.”
A similar incident also took place in January 2022, when a terror convict committed suicide in his cell in a prison in the city of Meknes.
The man also hanged himself with a piece of cloth that he attached to his cell’s window.
The Meknes prison authorities said that the detainee suffered from mental and psychological disorders and that he had been under medical treatment inside and outside the prison for his mental troubles.
