OCP Africa’s Multifaceted Approach to Sustainable Farming in Africa

Rabat – As Africa grapples with the daunting task of feeding its rapidly growing population despite boasting nearly 65% of the world’s uncultivated arable land, OCP Africa, a subsidiary of the OCP Group, is spearheading a comprehensive and innovative approach to agriculture.

With a commitment to transforming Africa into a global leader in sustainable farming, OCP Africa’s integrated strategy encompasses agri-tech innovation, financial empowerment, cooperative partnerships, and grassroots initiatives.

In a blog post published on the World Economic Forum website on the sidelines of this year’s Davos Forum in January 2023, OCP CEO Mostapha Terrab remarked that “Accelerating the agricultural revolution will require a substantial collective effort.”

This commitment to a collective effort to harness Africa’s potential was reflected in the actions taken by the Moroccan giant’s African subsidiary.

At the Dakar2 Summit organized by the African Development Bank Group on food sovereignty in Africa last january, OCP Africa CEO Mohammed Anouar Jamali indicated that the phosphate giant will allocate four million tonnes of fertilizer, “adapted to African soil and crop, for the continent in 2023 to bring impact to 44 million farmers.”

Agri-tech: Unleashing digital potential for farmers

Writing in the World Economic Forum blog in Davos, Terrab noted that while “technology is global,” “innovation is local.” Soil characteristics and growing conditions vary considerably, not only on a global scale, but also within each continent, country and region.

With this in mind, in March, at the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) in Doha, OCP Africa signed a strategic alliance with Microsoft’s Africa Transformation Office.

This collaboration aims to strengthen food security in Africa by developing OCP Africa’s digital agriculture platform, which integrates cutting-edge technologies such as the cloud and the agricultural data platform.

It notably seeks to support smallholder farmers and other Agri-stakeholders across the continent by 2025.

“We are convinced that precision farming, driven by the adoption of advanced technologies in agriculture, will revolutionize food production and help end hunger and poverty in Africa,” said Wael Elkabbany, Managing Director of Microsoft Africa Cluster at the signing of the alliance.

The digital revolution is poised to enhance farmer productivity, streamline business management, and facilitate seamless communication with stakeholders. By ensuring better access to products and agricultural services, OCP Africa is at the forefront of transforming traditional farming methods.

Agri-finance: Nurturing growth through capital mobilization

In his World Economic Forum blog post, Mostapha Terrab emphasized the untapped potential of African farmers, asserting that they are as capable and eager as their global counterparts.

To unlock this potential, OCP Africa initiated a pivotal partnership with the International Finance Corporation in October last year.

This partnership aims to mobilize a substantial $800 million in blended capital by 2030, providing African farmers with access to the right inputs, supply chains, financial tools, and innovations.

Collaborating with the Bank of Africa, OCP Africa is strategically designing projects to enhance access to fertilizers and other inputs for African farmers and agri-processors, with specific initiatives targeting cashew and rice value chains in various African nations.

South-south cooperation: fostering inclusive partnerships

In its 2022 report, OCP Africa underscored the need for an inclusive, partnership-based approach to overcome Africa’s challenges. According to the report, “Africa’s challenges are difficult to overcome without an inclusive, partnership-based approach.”

Building on this commitment, OCP Africa solidified its dedication to cooperative partnerships in 2023. This commitment was on display in the signing in June of two memoranda of understanding with the Togolese government on the sidelines of the High-Level Round Table on Fertilizers and Soil Health.

These agreements aim to strengthen cooperation in the agricultural and mining sectors, with a focus on producing phosphate fertilizers and enhancing the competitiveness of agricultural value chains in Togo.

So far, 20 African countries have received OCP’s assistance and support. Of these 20 countries, farmers in countries such as Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya have benefited from OCP Africa’s AgriBooster program. Other countries such as Mauritania, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Senegal have benefited from fertilizer donations.

Empowering local farmers

According to the 2022 report, “by facilitating access to adapted fertilizers, OCP Africa is fulfilling its key commitment to help feed the continent’s population by improving the health of their soils and preserving their environment.”

Last February, at the Argus Africa Fertilizer event in Nairobi, Kenya, Habiba Mouttaki presented OCP Africa’s initiatives, including the delivery of 550,000 tonnes of fertilizer to mitigate the impact of soaring commodity prices and drought.

Serving over four million farmers across the continent, this addresses the urgent need for support during times of crisis. OCP Africa’s agri booster program, farmer hubs, and OCP’s school lab collectively serve more than 530,000 farmers in Africa.

The intensified fertilizer production in Morocco, guided by OCP, significantly contributes to boosting agricultural yields across the continent. This holistic approach is not only enhancing food security but also empowering local farmers and communities.
