Rabat – Icelandic low-cost carrier, Play, has announced on Tuesday plans to inaugurate the first-ever direct flights from Reykjavik to Marrakech.
Scheduled to start operations in October, the airline is working to establish two weekly flights between the two destinations, linking Iceland and Marrakesh.
Commenting on the news, Play’s Chief Executive Officer, Birgir Jonsson, expressed enthusiasm about the venture. “This is a magical city that is rich with history and culture,” stated Jonsson.
“Everywhere we go, we give the competition a run for their money,” he said, adding that his company wants to “make travel more affordable.”
“I am sure our Marrakech services will be well-received by people who want to visit our beautiful country of Iceland,” the CEO concluded.
The news routes are the result of a collaboration between Play and the Moroccan National Tourist Office.
Under this partnership, Play says that it seeks to offer North American and European travelers enhanced accessibility to Marrakech, leveraging Iceland’s strategic position as a transatlantic hub.
The first flight from Keflavik International Airport to Marrakech Menara Airport is scheduled for October 17th, with Play operating flights on Thursdays and Sundays. Ticket sales for the new route have already started on the company’s website.
In addition, Play has unveiled plans for an additional connection to Madeira, Iceland expanding its product offerings for customers.
In recent months, Morocco has witnessed a spike in the number of airlines expanding their operations in the country ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Morocco’s co-hosting of the prestigious tournament is set to increase demand for air travel.
