Rabat – Police in Morocco arrested a 30-year-old man with a criminal record for his alleged involvement in a murder case against a student in Sefrou, about 28 kilometers from Fez.
The arrest took place on Monday morning in coordination between judicial police in Fez and Sefrou as well as the services of the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
Preliminary investigations show that the suspect attacked the victim and two of her colleagues, physically assaulting them with a knife, and gravely injuring the main victim who died vic immediately upon arrival at the hospital.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the motives behind the murder, a security source quoted by Moroccan news agency MAP said.
Investigations identified the suspect who was arrested in the El Menzel region near Sefrou, and police seized the weapon used in the criminal act.
Police arrested the suspect and placed him in custody pending judicial investigation to identify the motives of the crimes.
Morocco’s Directorate of National Security’s (DGSN) annual report last year said that security services reported 738,748 criminal cases, resulting in the arrest and prosecution of 723,874 individuals for different crimes in 2023.
According to the report data, violent crime witnessed a decline in the category of different serious offenses, with a 25% decrease in murders, assaults, and deadly injuries.
DGSN emphasized that police recorded a 10% decrease in the overall crime rate.
