Rabat – Four people died while 26 others sustained injuries following a devastating fire that erupted at the Debbagh shopping complex in the Bab Ftouh area of Fez’s ancient medina on Wednesday evening, according to local authorities.

Among the injured, ten suffered burns of varying degrees, three of whom are in critical condition, while 16 others are experiencing mild asphyxia symptoms from smoke inhalation, authorities have disclosed.

The injured have been promptly evacuated to the regional hospital and the University Hospital Center of Fez (CHU) to receive necessary medical treatment.

Initial investigations suggest that a short circuit, possibly related to repair work within the Debbagh shopping complex, may have ignited the fire.

The incident not only claimed lives but also caused significant material damage to approximately 25 shops within the commercial premises of Debbagh’s shopping complex.

As soon as they were notified, local authorities, security services, and civil defense units swiftly intervened to carry out rescue operations and contain the fire.

Their coordinated efforts mobilized all available resources and means to mitigate the impact of the tragedy.

An investigation has been opened by the concerned authorities, under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office, to determine the circumstances and causes of the incident and ascertain accountability.

Concerned authorities pledged assistance to those impacted by the fire and committed to taking measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
