Marrakech – Moroccan high school students preparing for the upcoming baccalaureate exams have initiated a campaign to show support for the Palestinian cause amidst Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza.
The campaign calls for students across all streams to wear clothing and symbols representing Palestine, such as the Palestinian keffiyeh or flag, during the standardized national exams.
The initiative aims to raise awareness about the Palestinian struggle and demonstrate that the younger generation has not forgotten the cause, despite claims by some on social media that it has lost its significance.
Organizers of the campaign believe that the timing of the exams, coinciding with the reported massacres of Palestinians in Gaza, presents an opportunity for students to make a symbolic gesture of solidarity.
The campaign has sparked a debate among Moroccans, with some arguing in favor, saying that wearing Palestinian symbols during exams is an effective way to show support and attract media attention to the issue.
Others, however, contend that Palestine needs more than symbolic gestures and that students should instead turn their focus to national causes, focusing on their academic integrity and respect for their teachers.
Similar awareness campaigns have also emerged in neighboring countries, including Algeria and Tunisia, where students are also preparing for their baccalaureate exams.
The standardized national exams in Morocco are set to take place from June 10 to 13, with make-up sessions scheduled for July 8 to 11.
Meanwhile, the death toll in Gaza has reportedly jumped to 36,439 as Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) continue their military operations against civilians.
Morocco has strongly condemned the recent IOF raid on a Palestinian refugee camp in Rafah’s Tal as-Sultan area, which has resulted in significant civilian casualties.
The image “All Eyes on Rafah” has gone viral on social media, especially Instagram, with millions of shares drawing attention to the ongoing brutal aggression. The post has renewed advocacy efforts following the deadly Israeli airstrike on the city in southern Gaza.
As the baccalaureate exams approach, it remains to be seen how widespread the campaign to wear Palestinian symbols will be among Moroccan students and whether it will have the desired impact on raising awareness about the Palestinian cause.
