Rabat – Morocco’s ambassador to France, Samira Sitail, has expressed that the widespread demonstrations in support of the Palestinian cause reflect Morocco’s democratic vitality.
The ambassador made her remarks in a new interview with French TV5 Monde last week, where she commended the remarkable demonstrations in support of Palestinians amid the genocidal war, launched by Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) in October of last year.
For Sitail, the marches are “absolutely remarkable and a great testament to the honor of Moroccan people, once again showing their support for the Palestinian people and their inalienable right to a state within the framework of the United Nations.”
Since the start of Israel’s genocide on Gaza, and throughout the IOF’s subsequent bombing of the West Bank and Lebanon, Moroccans have taken to the streets in major cities like Tangier, Casablanca, Marrakech, and Rabat to protest. Citizens are calling for a ceasefire and for Israel and for the US to be held accountable for their complicity in war crimes.
In her interview, the ambassador conveyed Morocco’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, noting that the government has been calling for an “immediate ceasefire, the preservation of lives as well as the protection of civilians.”
Morocco has also called for the establishment of humanitarian corridors to ensure aid reaches Palestinian populations “under the best condition,” she said, emphasizing that Morocco has long endorsed the two-state solution that would “allow Palestinians and Israelis to live in peace.”
On the continued bilateral ties between Morocco and Israel, the ambassador noted that Rabat engages in daily dialogue with Tel Aviv.
Morocco re-established ties with Israel in December 2020, sparking staunch division throughout the country about the decision.
During the same day of the announcement, Morocco reaffirmed that the decision to re-establish ties with Israel does not change its firm position in support of the Palestinian cause and Palestinians’ legitimate right to an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
On that occasion, King Mohammed VI reiterated the “coherent, constant and unchanged position of the Kingdom of Morocco on the Palestinian question, which is grounded in the two-state solution: two States living side by side, in peace and security; negotiations between the Palestinian and the Israeli sides as the only means for achieving a comprehensive and final settlement.”
The Moroccan government’s ties with Israel have also been a major reason for protests since the start of the Gaza genocide. Citizens are calling on the government to sever the bilateral ties in light of Israel’s war crimes against the Palestinian people.
Sitail said in her recent interview that Morocco’s diplomatic ties with Israel allowed the country to be the first authorized to deliver food aid to Palestinians in Gaza via land routes.
The North African country has sent multiple shipments of humanitarian aid to Gaza amid Israel’s genocide. The first aid convoy was sent last March with 40 tons of medical and food commodities to support Palestinians suffering from dire humanitarian conditions because of IOF massacres.
“We must not overlook the fact that we can exert pressure when needed and to say what must be said to Israeli authorities,” she said, adding that Morocco does not need “television cameras or microphones nearby to show what we are doing or how we are doing it.”
Discussions between Morocco and Israel are ongoing regarding the situation, Sitail added, noting that countries like Morocco will need to sit at the negotiation table when weapons are finally silenced.
On November 15, King Mohammed VI congratulated President Palestine Mahmoud Abbas and reiterated Morocco’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause.
The King also stressed Morocco’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people, emphasizing their right to an independent state, with East Jerusalem as the capital, through international legal resolutions.
