Rabat – Moroccan diplomacy’s Latin American reachout continues to bear fruits, with Mexico being the last country where many voices are increasingly speaking in support of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces.
The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), a historic political party in Mexico, announced on Wednesday its support of Morocco’s position on the Western Sahara issue.
With this decision, PRI’s President Alejandro Moreno said on X, the Mexican party “marks the beginning of a new stage in its international relations, reaffirming its recognition and solidarity with the legitimate struggle of the Moroccan people to defend their sovereignty over the Sahara.”
The move marks a pivotal shift in PRI’s position since it had previously enacted Mexico’s recognition of the Polisario separatist front while in power in 1979.
Moreno shared his party’s statement following a meeting with the President of Morocco’s House of Representatives Rachid Talbi Alami in Mexico City; the high-ranking Moroccan MP was leading a delegation of parliamentary group leaders on a two-day visit to the Mexican capital.
The significant decision stems from the party’s understanding of the “constantly transforming multipolar world,” Moreno argued, asserting that “the PRI remains at the forefront, defending Mexico’s interests and promoting a renewed global architecture.”
He further stressed the importance of non-intervention and peaceful conflict resolution.
Meanwhile, Deputy Marcela Guerra strongly advocated for stronger Morocco-Mexico relations on behalf of the party founded in 1912.

During a special session at the Mexican Chamber of Deputies, she pointed out how both countries play strategic roles in their regional environments. Morocco and Mexico serve as gateways to Africa and the Americas and thus play a crucial role in international stability and development, she said.
In her address to the lower house, Guerra mentioned the partnership potential built through 60 years of diplomatic relations and various cooperation agreements across multiple sectors.
On January 20, the Mexican Observatory for Moroccan Sahara saw the light in Mexico City, providing a new platform dedicated to advocating for Morocco’s territorial integrity in Latin America.
Both PRI’s position and the observatory’s launch signal an awareness in Latin America of the growing international support Morocco’s autonomy plan has received in recent years.
The Observatory’s president said that it “will serve as a hub for promoting bilateral relations,” noting that its creation comes amid growing international support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Western Sahara.
