Rabat – Police in Nador thwarted a drug trafficking operation on Saturday, in which they seized more than one ton of hashish – a cannabis concentrate – and arrested six suspects.
The Regional Judicial Police Service of Nador conducted the arrest operation in coordination with Morocco’s General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) to target an international drug trafficking network operating across multiple cities in the northeastern part of the country, including Al Aaroui, Selouane, Beni Ansar, and Farkhana.
The suspects are reportedly two women and four men between the ages of 35 and 54.
Police arrested the suspects while they were preparing vehicles for international drug smuggling, using modified cars with hidden compartments specifically designed to conceal cannabis.
Authorities confiscated 1.027 tons of the drug, along with seven vehicles, packaging materials, and cash believed to be proceeds from drug trafficking activities.
Background checks revealed that two of the suspects were already wanted nationwide for their alleged involvement in similar international drug rings.
Police put the suspects in custody under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office, and an investigation is underway to identify accomplices and determine the full extent of the criminal network’s operations.
The successful intervention is part of Morocco’s efforts to combat drug trafficking networks operating both domestically and across international borders.
The case is also part of larger endeavors by Moroccan authorities to disrupt narcotics supply chains that use the country as a transit point between North Africa and Europe.
On Thursday evening, police foiled a drug trafficking attempt to smuggle over 5.7 tons of cannabis near Tangier.
According to the DGSN’s latest annual report, Morocco’s police handled 92,346 drug-related cases last year, arresting 119,692 individuals, 287 of them foreign nationals.
