Rabat – Federal prosecutors in the US have charged a California man accused of attempting to assassinate US President Donald Trump during a high-profile event in Washington, D.C., an incident that has shaken political circles and raised fresh concerns over security and political rhetoric.

Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, California. According to prosecutors, Allen tried to force his way through a secured perimeter near the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, a black-tie gathering that brings together journalists and political figures each year.

Officials said a Secret Service agent came under fire as the suspect attempted to breach security. Agents intervened within moments and stopped the advance before the suspect could reach the main venue.

During the suspect’s first appearance in federal court, prosecutor Jocelyn Ballantine stated that he had sought to kill the US president. Dressed in a blue prison uniform, Allen did not respond to the accusations. He told the court he would answer questions truthfully and noted that he holds a master’s degree in computer science.

Judge Matthew Sharbaugh ordered Allen to remain in custody as the case moves forward. A follow-up hearing later this week will address whether he will stay detained ahead of trial.

Investigators now examine how he approached the heavily secured area and the circumstances that led to the confrontation.

The case marks what officials describe as the third attempt against Trump since 2024, a pattern that has intensified debate in Washington.

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt placed part of the blame on the tone of political discourse, arguing that repeated attacks against the president may push unstable individuals toward violence. At the same time, she dismissed claims of a security failure, noting that agents stopped the suspect before he reached the event.

The incident has reignited questions about the safety of public officials in the US, especially during major public gatherings. As the investigation continues, authorities face pressure to clarify how the suspect reached the perimeter and whether additional measures may be required in the future.
