AS FAR is preparing for one of the biggest matches in its recent four-decade history as the Moroccan club will face Mamelodi Sundowns this Sunday in the first leg of the CAF Champions League final at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.
According to Elbotola, AS FAR has already arrived in South Africa to complete preparations ahead of the continental showdown. The early arrival reflects the seriousness with which the Moroccan side is approaching the final, as the club seeks to adapt to local conditions before facing the South African champions on their home turf.
The Moroccan club will enter the first leg with an almost complete squad. Senegalese defender Fallou Mendy remains the only absentee, as he still requires additional rest and will therefore miss the Pretoria clash. However, the defender is expected to return for the second leg scheduled for May 24 at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
Coach Alexandre Santos will still be able to count on the majority of his key players, with most of the squad considered physically and technically ready ahead of the decisive encounter.
Self-confidence
Speaking to CAFOnline, Santos stressed that preparations have been progressing in a positive atmosphere marked by focus and discipline inside the camp.
“We know very well the strength of our opponents, Mamelodi Sundowns. They are a well-organised team with great continental experience,” Santos said.
The Portuguese coach explained that his staff has been working extensively on tactical, physical, and mental preparation to ensure the team reaches the highest level possible ahead of the historic final.
Santos also emphasized the importance of tactical discipline and minimizing mistakes against a Sundowns side known for its quick passing football and high-level organization.
“We are focusing on tactical discipline, reducing mistakes and making the most of the opportunities that come our way,” he added. “We are also working a lot on the mental side so that the players enter the match with confidence and strong character.”
Strategies
AS FAR has built its continental campaign on defensive solidity and collective discipline. While Sundowns are famous for their possession-based tiki-taka style, the Moroccan side prefers a compact low-block system designed to frustrate opponents and exploit spaces on the counterattack.
That tactical approach could prove decisive against a Sundowns team that often commits players forward in attack. AS FAR will look to capitalize on those spaces through quick transitions and pace in advanced areas.
The Moroccan club will rely on the experience of goalkeeper Ahmed Tagnaouti, the leadership of captain Mohamed Hrimat in midfield, and the attacking quality of Amine Zouhzouh as it seeks a positive result in Pretoria.

Santos also highlighted the role of experience within the squad, noting that several players are familiar with the pressure of major African fixtures.
“Experience is an important factor in matches like these,” he said. “But for me, the most important thing is the team spirit and the great desire I see in all the players to achieve this dream.”
The Portuguese coach acknowledged the historical significance of the occasion, with AS FAR aiming to win its first continental title in nearly 41 years.
“AS FAR is a club with a rich history, and its fans deserve to celebrate another continental title,” Santos stated. “We will fight to bring the trophy back to its natural place.”
