Rabat – The 2026 FIFA World Cup is once again facing questions about its officiating. On Wednesday, FIFA confirmed that Argentine referee Facundo Tello will officiate the quarter-final between Morocco and France. He will have an all-Argentine team of assistant referees and VAR officials with him.

The appointment has quickly sparked debate across social media. Many fans believe FIFA could have avoided another controversy by choosing officials from a different country.

The discussion comes just days after another refereeing storm at the World Cup. Argentina’s match against Egypt ended with heated reactions over several decisions, including VAR interventions that Egyptian fans strongly criticized. That match added to growing concerns about refereeing consistency during the tournament.

Now, attention has shifted to one of the last eight matches of the competition, Morocco vs France.

A déjà vu moment

For many Moroccan supporters, this fixture brings back memories of the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-final. Morocco lost 2-0 to France in Qatar, but many fans still believe that key decisions by Mexican referee César Arturo Ramos went against the Atlas Lions. Several penalty appeals were denied, snatching away the team’s and fans’ dream of completing a historic World Cup campaign.

2024 Olympic Games’ shadow

For Moroccan fans, the tension surrounding Argentine officiating runs far deeper than standard tournament anxieties. The appointment immediately recalls the toxic fallout from the opening match of the 2024 Paris Olympics between Morocco and Argentina.

During that explosive fixture, a Swedish referee, Glenn Nyberg, added an unprecedented 15 minutes of stoppage time, allowing Argentina to score a late, highly controversial equalizer. Following a pitch invasion and a chaotic two-hour suspension, VAR ultimately disallowed the goal, securing a historic 2-1 win for Morocco.

However, the subsequent media war, where Argentine coach Javier Mascherano branded the match a “circus,” and the Argentine FA filed formal protests, left local supporters intensely protective of how their national team is treated when tied to Argentine footballing influence.

Good faith

There is no evidence that Argentine officials cannot referee the match fairly. FIFA selects referees from its elite international list, and every official is expected to remain neutral regardless of their nationality.

However, football is also about trust. In a tournament already filled with refereeing debates, many believe FIFA should avoid decisions that create unnecessary questions before kickoff.

The main question that the supporters raised is why an all-Argentine refereeing team was chosen when other experienced officials were available.

The concern is not only about the referee’s nationality. It is about protecting the credibility of one of the biggest matches of the tournament.

If the game passes without controversy, the discussion will quickly disappear. But if one major decision changes the outcome, the spotlight will immediately return to FIFA’s choice.

The governing body had an opportunity to remove any doubt before the match. Instead, it made a decision that has already become one of the biggest talking points ahead of Morocco vs France.
