Rabat – Argentina’s Football Association (AFA) said it may have been targeted by a cyberattack after emails were sent from its official accounts criticizing the refereeing in the national team’s World Cup victory over Egypt.
According to the Argentine news outlet La Calle, the football association allegedly sent emails to journalists stating that “Argentina did not win” and that the result was due to “corrupt refereeing decisions.”
The AFA dismissed the emails as fake, stating that they were neither issued nor authorized by its communications department and were sent following unauthorized access to its computer systems.
Sources from the Argentine institution said that a group of Egyptian hackers breached part of the AFA’s database, allowing them to obtain several email addresses, passwords, and IP addresses.
In response, the Argentine Football Association said in a statement that it had opened an investigation to assess the full extent of the incident, strengthen its cybersecurity measures, and determine how the unauthorized access occurred.
The AFA also urged the public to disregard any unusual messages recently received from its accounts, especially those containing links, attachments, or requests for personal information.
“There is a possibility that our account has been subject to unauthorized access, so we are working to clarify what happened and adopt the necessary security measures,” the association added.
