Casablanca – Morocco’s Ambassador to Italy, Youssef Balla, has called for all the circumstances surrounding the death of Moroccan citizen Abderrahim Fakir to be fully established, with full respect for truth, justice, and human dignity.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Balla also appealed to Moroccans living in Italy to show unity, responsibility, and vigilance. He urged them not to be drawn into provocations or attempts to exploit the tragedy. The ambassador also encouraged the Moroccan community to express their grief alongside their Italian friends with dignity, calm, and full respect for public order.
The ambassador also thanked the many members of Italian civil society and citizens who sent messages of solidarity, sympathy, and support following the incident. Fakir died on July 19 in the city of Bologna during an intervention by Italian security forces.
Balla also expressed regret over what he described as public statements and positions that reached conclusions before the judicial investigation had finished. He said such reactions do not reflect the values of coexistence or Italy’s reputation as a country recognized for integration.
He reaffirmed his confidence in the Italian judicial system and said it is up to the courts alone to determine any possible responsibilities.
According to the ambassador, the judicial authorities will decide whether the intervention by the security forces complied with the applicable regulations, whether there were any failures, or whether any actions were committed by people who had no legal authority to intervene.
The case has drawn attention in both Morocco and Italy as Italian authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Fakir’s death.
