Rabat – A Moroccan agricultural worker was killed, and eight others were injured in a road accident on Sunday afternoon in Serracapriola, in Italy’s southern Foggia province.
The accident occurred when a small truck carrying a group of agricultural workers veered off the road near Montesecco before overturning, according to Morocco’s Consulate General in Naples.
One of the workers died at the scene, while the others sustained injuries. One of the injured workers is in critical condition.
According to local authorities, the critically injured worker suffered multiple serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital. Three other passengers were taken to an emergency department by ambulance.
The workers were reportedly returning to Foggia after a day of agricultural work in the neighboring Molise region.
According to Italian news agency Adnkronos, all nine workers were Moroccan and residents of the nearby town of Torremaggiore. The town’s mayor, Emilio Di Pumpo, said they were returning home after a day working in the fields.
“They were workers returning home after a hard day spent in the fields of our Capitanata. Women and men who, through their sacrifice and dignity, contribute every day to agricultural work and to the economy of our area,” Di Pumpo said.
Serracapriola Mayor Michele Leombruno told Adnkronos that the most seriously injured worker was airlifted to a hospital, while three other injured passengers were taken to an emergency department by other means.
Moroccan workers are among the foreign workers employed in Italy’s agricultural sector, particularly in regions known for fruit, vegetable, and other seasonal farming activities.
Many travel to Italy for seasonal agricultural work, where they are employed in harvesting and other farm-related jobs. The sector relies heavily on migrant workers, especially during periods of high seasonal demand.
