Rabat – Social media platforms operated by tech giant Meta have crashed down on Tuesday afternoon, with users around the globe reporting that they can not access their account.
The incident first triggered widespread panic among users who thought that their accounts might have been hacked.
“Not me changing my passwords on FB three times in five minutes thinking I got hacked only to find out that Facebook/IG are down for everyone,” one social media user wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
When attempting to access Facebook, users find themselves on the homepage, suggesting that they have logged out of their accounts.
Less than an hour after the shutdown occurred, hashtags relating to the incident became the highest trending on X.
The hashtags include #Facebook&IG with over 38,000 posts among other hashtags.
The news has affected the value of Meta stocks, which lost 1.72% of its value in the wake of the crash.
Some users are speculating that the crush is likely caused by a cyberattack, with the hashtag #CyberAttack widely trending on X.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Meta hasn’t issued any statement clarifying the situation.
Users have also reported crashes on other platforms, giving more momentum to the theory of a cyber attack.
“Not just Fb & IG. Looks like most of the services took a hit in last 30-45min. #CyberAttack?” on X user wrote.
