Green March Legacy: Morocco Launches $40 Million Development Projects

Rabat – To commemorate the 49th anniversary of the Green March, Morocco unveiled a series of development projects on Wednesday in the Guelmim region, with investments totaling 416.5 million MAD ($40 million).

These initiatives aim to improve local infrastructure, expand social services, and promote inclusive growth in Morocco’s southern provinces, as highlighted during the ceremonies attended by Mohamed Najem Abhay, Wali of the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, and Mbarka Bouaida, President of the Regional Council.

Over 300 million MAD ($29 million) will go toward rehabilitating under-resourced neighborhoods and enhancing essential infrastructure across the Guelmim province.

Key projects include the new Lalla Amina Center for the Protection of Children in Difficult Situations, which received an investment of more than 11 million MAD ($1 million) and will provide support to vulnerable youth in the area.

Also inaugurated was the Princess Lalla Meryem Social Qualification Complex, a 25.2 million MAD ($2.4 million) project designed to facilitate access to social and administrative services, judicial support, and skills training for women.

A significant portion of the funding – 320.6 million MAD ($32 million) – is allocated to an extensive urban rehabilitation program in Guelmim and Bouizakarne, covering a total of 18 projects.

In Guelmim, eight projects, totaling 220.59 million MAD ($22 million), focus on public infrastructure improvements, while 10 projects in Bouizakarne, amounting to 100 million MAD ($10 million), are geared toward urban renewal and enhanced amenities.

Additionally, the redevelopment of streets and avenues in Guelmim, valued at 45 million MAD ($4.3 million), includes upgrades to public lighting, sidewalks, and the electrical network.

In a speech commemorating the Green March anniversary, King Mohammed VI underscored the importance of these investments as part of a broader effort to honor Morocco’s territorial integrity and support sustainable development in the Sahara region.

He called on Moroccans to uphold the spirit of the Green March, emphasizing that national progress should benefit all regions equitably, from the northern Rif to the southern provinces.
