Azzedine Ounahi is on the verge of joining Girona in a permanent move from Olympique de Marseille. The Moroccan international has agreed terms with the Spanish side, with only Marseille’s final approval pending.
The 25-year-old caught Girona’s attention after an impressive loan spell at Panathinaikos, where he scored five goals and registered seven assists in 37 appearances. He was voted the Greek club’s Player of the Season and earned a spot in the league’s Team of the Year.
Girona, preparing for Champions League football, submitted an €8 million offer – matching Marseille’s initial valuation after the French club briefly raised their asking price to €12 million.
Ounahi, who rose to prominence during Morocco’s run to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals, had joined Marseille in January 2023 from Angers. However, his time in Ligue 1 was disrupted by injuries and inconsistency.
Marseille have already left him out of their pre-season squad, along with three other African players: Cameroon duo Faris Moumbagna and Simon Ngapandouetnbu, and Ivorian player Bamo Meïté.
Ounahi, who rose through the ranks of Morocco’s Mohammed VI Academy, is now set to relaunch his career in La Liga.
