Rabat – The 2026 Finalissima between Spain and Argentina has been called off after plans to stage the match in Doha fell apart because of the ongoing war in the Middle East.

The game had been scheduled for March 27 at Lusail Stadium in Qatar, where the European champions were set to face the Copa America winners in one of the most anticipated international matches of the year.

However, the dire security situation in the region made it impossible for the match to go ahead as planned.

UEFA confirmed on Sunday that the match had been cancelled because of what it described as the current political situation in the region.

The decision came after several countries in the Middle East closed their airspace following the US-Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliation. Qatar was among the countries affected, and its football association had already announced a temporary suspension of games and tournaments earlier this month.

UEFA said it tried to save the fixture and looked at several alternatives once Doha was no longer a realistic option. But, according to the governing body, those proposals were rejected by the Argentine Football Association.

Among the options discussed was hosting the match at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu on March 27, with an even split of fans from both sides.

UEFA also proposed a two-leg version of the Finalissima, with one match in Madrid and the other in Buenos Aires at a later date. Other neutral venues in Europe were also considered for March 27, March 30, or even December 18, but none of those plans moved forward.

UEFA added that Argentina later suggested playing the match after this summer’s World Cup, though Spain reportedly had no room in its calendar. The body also said Argentina made itself available only for March 31 at one stage, which did not work for the organizers.

Spain’s football federation said all parties eventually accepted that holding the match in Doha was no longer possible. It added that it had been open to staging the game in Spain, at a neutral venue, or even under a different format.

The cancellation is a major disappointment for fans, especially because the match was expected to bring Lionel Messi up against Spain’s star Lamine Yamal for the first time.

The Finalissima was revived in 2022, when Argentina beat Italy 3-0 at Wembley. This year’s edition had all the ingredients of another major event, but the situation off the pitch proved too serious to overcome.

For now, the game is off, and no new date has been announced.
